Adeniyi Kayode, Driver in Fatal Anthony Joshua Team Crash Granted N5 Million Bail in Ogun

A Magistrate Court in Sagamu, Ogun State, has granted bail to Adeniyi Kayode, the driver involved in the December 29, 2025, crash that claimed the lives of former world heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami.

Kayode was admitted to bail in the sum of N5 million, with two sureties, while the court adjourned the matter to February 25, 2026, for further hearing.

The 46-year-old driver is standing trial on a four-count charge including dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care resulting in bodily harm and property damage, and operating a vehicle without a valid national driver’s licence.

The charges are brought under the Federal Highway Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, as applicable in Ogun State.

At the hearing, prosecution counsel Nijiwe Richard requested an adjournment to transmit the case file to the Ogun State Attorney General’s office for legal advice through the Department of Public Prosecutions.

Defence counsel, Abiodun Olalekan, opposed the application, stating the defence was ready to proceed. Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun granted the prosecution’s request, scheduling the next hearing for February 25.

The tragic accident occurred on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, when a Lexus SUV carrying Joshua, Kayode, and the two deceased coaches collided with a stationary truck. Joshua and the driver sustained minor injuries, while Ayodele and Ghami were fatally injured.

Following the crash, Joshua was discharged after medical clearance and later visited a funeral home in Lagos with his mother to pay respects.

The remains of Ayodele and Ghami were repatriated to the United Kingdom, where a funeral prayer service was held on January 4, 2026, at the London Central Mosque.

Both Ayodele and Ghami were pivotal members of Joshua’s training camp, and their deaths sent shockwaves through the international boxing community, highlighting the profound impact of the accident on the sports world.

The court proceedings in Sagamu now mark the beginning of the legal reckoning for the driver as the case moves toward trial next month.
