Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has expressed his delight after opening his scoring account for Atlético Madrid in their impressive 3-1 victory over Sevilla in LaLiga, insisting that the most important thing was helping the team secure all three points.
Lookman found the back of the net in the 26th minute at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán, doubling Atlético’s advantage after Alex Baena had opened the scoring four minutes into the encounter. Baena later added his second before half-time as Diego Simeone’s side raced into a commanding 3-0 lead.
The Nigeria international calmly converted Pablo Barrios’ pass inside the penalty area, placing his effort into the bottom-left corner to register his first LaLiga goal of the season.
“It feels good to get my first goal,” Lookman said after the game.
“But the most important thing is the three points and the performance from the team.”
The goal came at an important moment for the Nigerian, who had gone without a goal in Atlético’s opening two league matches after being deployed in a more central attacking role.
Simeone had previously acknowledged that Lookman is more effective when operating from the left wing or as a second striker rather than playing as a conventional centre-forward. The Atlético coach returned him to a position where he could attack defenders and exploit his pace and movement against Sevilla.
The decision paid immediate dividends.
Lookman was a constant threat during his 66 minutes on the pitch and even appeared to have scored again shortly after the restart, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside. He was eventually replaced by Arnau Ortiz as Atlético reshuffled their attack.
The former Atalanta star praised Atlético’s overall performance, highlighting the understanding developing among the players.
“We played very well and showed good understanding,” Lookman said.
“It was a sharp performance from the team and we deserved the three points.”
Atlético had already taken control of the match before Lookman’s goal, with Baena finishing a move created by Lee Kang-in in the fourth minute.
Baena then restored the three-goal advantage in the 33rd minute with a superb effort from outside the penalty area, giving Atlético a 3-0 lead before the break.
Sevilla improved after the interval and pulled one goal back through Miguel Sierra in the 66th minute, but Atlético remained composed enough to protect their advantage and secure their second league victory of the campaign.
The result moved Atlético onto seven points from their opening three matches and underlined their strong start to the 2026/27 LaLiga season.
For Lookman, the goal also represents a timely response after the early tactical questions surrounding his role at the club.
His return to the left side allowed him to play with greater freedom, and his direct running caused problems for the Sevilla defence throughout his time on the pitch.
The Nigerian forward will now hope the goal can be the beginning of a productive spell in Madrid as Atlético continue the pursuit of their targets on both the domestic and European fronts.
For now, however, Lookman is simply enjoying a night when everything came together.
He scored his first LaLiga goal for Atlético, helped his team beat Sevilla 3-1 and showed once again why Simeone believes he can be an important weapon in the club’s attack.
And Lookman’s message after the victory was simple: the goal feels good, but the three points feel even better.
