Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, has issued a strong call for urgent reforms in Nigerian football governance, urging the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation to take decisive action.
Speaking at the 2026 NFF Extraordinary General Assembly in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, Dikko stressed that the current statutes guiding Nigerian football have become outdated and no longer reflect modern realities.

“What worked in the past can no longer meet today’s demands,” he said.
Dikko emphasized that Nigerian football must align with global standards if it hopes to remain competitive and relevant on the international stage.
“The time for rhetoric is over, the time to act is now,” he added.
The NSC chairman pointed out that the responsibility lies squarely with the NFF leadership to reposition the game and address long-standing structural issues.
He warned that failure to implement meaningful reforms could continue to hinder the growth of football in the country, especially following recent disappointments on the international stage.
Dikko concluded by urging stakeholders to embrace change and ensure that governance structures are strengthened, transparent, and capable of driving Nigerian football forward.
