In a major stride toward reshaping Nigeria’s sports infrastructure, Governor Alex Otti has unveiled plans for a visionary “Stadium City” project in Umuahia, signaling a bold new chapter for sports development in Abia State and beyond.
The announcement came during a courtesy visit by the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, who hailed Abia as “the home of football in Nigeria.” Gusau praised the state’s legacy of excellence in the game, including historic back-to-back African club titles, and commended the rapid transformation of Abia Warriors FC under Governor Otti’s administration.

“The history of sports in Nigeria cannot be complete without a mention of Abia State,” Gusau said, urging the state government to prioritize the rehabilitation of the Umuahia Township Stadium. He assured the NFF’s technical support to bring the facility up to international standards.
Governor Otti responded with assurances of immediate and long-term investments, announcing that the Umuahia Township Stadium would be upgraded as an interim solution, while the ambitious Abia Stadium City—a state-of-the-art complex featuring an entertainment village, plazas, residential apartments, and a conference center—would position the state as a hub for continental sports tourism.
“I have already approved the upgrade of the Umuahia Township Stadium,” Otti said. “But the future lies in the Abia Stadium City. The land has been acquired, and designs are ongoing. This is how we build lasting legacies.”
He reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to place sports development among its highest priorities, calling football “a uniting factor” and a powerful tool for youth engagement and community growth.
The event, held at the governor’s country home in Nvosi, Isialangwa South LGA, was attended by top sports officials including Abia Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba; Chairman of Abia Warriors FC, John Obuh; and other notable figures in the state’s sports sector.
Governor Otti also took the opportunity to congratulate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the recent exploits of the Super Falcons, describing their performance as a proud moment for Nigeria.
With the NFF pledging technical support and the Abia government committing resources and vision, stakeholders say Abia is well on its way to reclaiming and elevating its status as Nigeria’s football heartbeat.
