A WELL- CONDITIONED HEART

CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE IS the most common cause of death in Nigeria today. It is prevalent because we clog our arteries by eating the wrong foods, and we do not condition the heart through proper physical activity.

When we exercise, the lungs take in more air and the heart grows stronger. As a result, the heart is able to pump more blood with fewer heartbeats.

Why is this so important? A well- conditioned heart has about sixty beats per minute, but an unconditioned heart has eighty beats – or more – per minute.

If you have ever owned a dog, perhaps you noticed the animal’s rapid heartbeat. It’s one of the reason dogs live fewer years than humans. The heart of that little pet wears out from overuse.

Those twenty extra beats per minute of an unconditioned heart result in about one thousand two hundred extra beats per hour – nearly twenty – nine thousand extra beats a day and over ten million beat per year.

If you put excessive mileage on your car, it won’t be long until the engine starts to sputter – and eventually fail. Just think of the consequences of adding ten million extra beats on your heart every year for twenty or thirty years. It’s not a pretty picture..
