Venezuela Flaunt More Women’s U17 World Cup Semi-final Appearances Than Nigeria, But Flamingos Are Better On Current Form

It will be a titanic battle of historical statistics versus current form on Sunday night, when the Flamingos of Nigeria face Venezuela’s Puff Girls in a quarter-finals fixture at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

Sports247 reports that the coastal city of Salé in north-west Morocco will be the venue once again, as Venezuela flaunt past feats of two previous semi-final appearances in the female global cadet competition, while Nigeria has only one.

Venezuela also flaunt their most recent heroic feat, which was defeating Germany 1-0 in the round of 16, but that’s where the edge they have over Nigeria ends; as the Flamingos enter Sunday’s game with better credentials on current form.

First is the fact that Nigeria won bronze in 2022, after losing their only semi-final so far in the cadet competition, and they won two matches during this year’s group stage, while Venezuela lost two, then qualified only as a third placed team.

While Venezuela qualified by the skin of their teeth before shocking Germany in the round of 16, Nigeria have waxed stronger with three wins on the bounce since slumping 2-1 to Poland in their opening game, which makes Coach Akeem Busari’s side better than the Puff Girls on current form.

Busari’s squad’s searing resurgence has now been highlighted in a preview of Sunday’s match by Score Nigeria, which noted that the Flamingos have gone on to defeat Puerto Rico 2-0, Korea DPR 3-1 and Mexico 2-1, while also looking good enough not only to reach the final for the first time but even go all the way to the trophy.

The preview noted in part: “Nigeria have been ever-present at the eight U17 World Cups with their best outing being a third-place finish in 2022, while they reached the quarter-finals four times – 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2024.

“Venezuela, on the other hand, fell at the third-place final in 2014 and 2016. In Morocco 2026, Nigeria have scored eight goals and let in four, while Venezuela have let in six goals and scored four goals in four matches.

“Three of the South Americans’ four goals were scored in a 3-2 victory over Zambia in the group stage. They only advanced from the first round as one of the best third-placed teams after they lost 2-0 to both Japan and France.

“Key player will be goalkeeper Valeria Rebaneles, who was sent off against Zambia only to come back against Germany in the Round of 16 to help them record a shock 1-0 victory that has now set up this Sunday night Showdown.”

Sports247 reports further that it is now left to be seen if the Flamingos will rule on current form and reach their second semi-final, or whether Venezuela will pull off yet another shock in this encounter that begins at 7pm Nigeria time.
