Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel believes Unai Emery could be the manager to help Manchester United reset their struggling project, arguing that the Aston Villa boss has demonstrated the experience and tactical ability required to manage a club under intense pressure.
Mikel suggested that United’s hierarchy could turn to Emery if the club decides it has had enough of its current direction and wants a fresh start. He acknowledged the scale of the challenge at Old Trafford, where supporter frustration has grown amid the club’s continuing search for consistency.

The former Chelsea midfielder also reflected on Emery’s difficult spell at Arsenal, noting that replacing Arsène Wenger came with significant expectations and the challenge of managing a club undergoing a major transition.
However, Mikel believes Emery has developed since that experience, pointing to his subsequent work at Villarreal and his progress at Aston Villa as evidence of his ability to build competitive teams and adapt to demanding circumstances.
Emery’s work at Villa has attracted attention despite a major squad overhaul during the summer. The club sold several important players, including Morgan Rogers to Chelsea, Ezri Konsa to Arsenal and Youri Tielemans to Manchester United, while other established members of the squad also departed. Villa brought in new players as Emery began rebuilding the team.
Mikel praised Emery’s ability to keep Villa competitive despite the disruption, saying he had been impressed by the manager’s work over successive seasons.
“What he’s done with this Aston Villa team, it’s brilliant. It’s amazing to see what Unai Emery is doing season after season,” Mikel said.
He highlighted the scale of Villa’s transition, explaining that many observers expected the club to struggle after losing players who had formed the backbone of the team over several campaigns.
For Mikel, Emery’s experience rebuilding teams and navigating difficult transitions makes him a potential option for Manchester United if the club chooses to change direction.
Any move would depend on United’s decision-making and Emery’s own ambitions, but Mikel’s comments place the Spaniard among the managers he believes could be equipped to handle the pressure of restoring stability at Old Trafford.
