The long-awaited Nigerian Rugby Premier League will eventually begin in the middle of next month with a tight format involving six men’s teams along with another six for female players.
Sports247 gathered that the forthcoming league is part of a proposed development of the sport through geo-political zoning that Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF) has set in motion.
This was disclosed by NRFF President, Dr Ademola Are, who confirmed that the league will commence with a regional format in November, following the successful acquisition of a sponsor for the competition.
Are disclosed that a decision to this effect was reached during an emergency executive committee meeting in Abuja, where members agreed that the league will begin with regional contests to produce six zonal champions that will advance to the national finals.
He explained further that the national finals, which have already been tagged Rugby Super Cup, will hold in Abuja in February 2027, ahead of which the NRFF has been working hard to secure all support needed to launch the league.
”A committee has been set up to further examine the competition’s format, which is expected to feature six men’s teams and six women’s teams competing for national honours. The committee is expected to submit its report to the board next Thursday.
”Support is being considered for the regional competitions, with funds expected to be made available to facilitate the matches, while the federation has also appointed managers to coordinate rugby activities across the country’s six geo-political zones,” Are expatiated.
Sports247 reports further that Are pointed out that the six zonal team managers are expected to strengthen communication between the federation and state rugby associations, while also ensuring timely spread of information.
