The YellowGreens defeated Gambia by 160 runs in Abuja on Tuesday, producing an impressive all-round performance led by Selim Salau’s unbeaten 105 off 58 balls.

Nigeria finished their innings on 262 for one wicket before dismissing Gambia for 102 in 17.2 overs, securing a convincing win in their opening match of the competition.

Salau’s century was the standout performance, but the contributions of Isaac Danladi and Isaac Okpe also demonstrated the strength of Nigeria’s batting lineup.

Danladi scored 86 runs from 48 deliveries, while Okpe smashed an unbeaten 56 off only 16 balls. Their efforts helped Nigeria establish a target that proved too difficult for Gambia to chase.

The bowlers completed the job, with Ridwan Abdulkareem and Sylvester Okpe claiming three wickets each.

Beyond the result, Nigeria’s performance provides an opportunity to consider the attention given to sports outside football.

Football remains the country’s most followed sport, attracting substantial media coverage and public interest. However, performances in cricket demonstrate that Nigerian athletes can also compete strongly in other sporting disciplines.

Cricket has an established international structure, with national teams competing through the International Cricket Council’s qualification pathway. Nigeria’s campaign in Abuja is part of the contest for places in the 2027 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Regional Final.

A strong showing in the tournament could help the YellowGreens move closer to that goal while giving more Nigerians a reason to follow the sport.

Greater visibility for cricket and other less-publicized sports could also help attract sponsors, improve grassroots participation and create more opportunities for young athletes.

However, one impressive victory alone cannot resolve the challenges facing sports development. Sustained investment, facilities, coaching, youth competitions and consistent media coverage are all important to building lasting progress.

For now, Nigeria’s opening performance offers an encouraging example of what the country can achieve outside football.

The YellowGreens must next turn their attention to Zambia as they seek to build on their winning start and strengthen their qualification campaign.

Their victory has delivered the result. The challenge now is to ensure that performances like this receive the recognition and support needed to help Nigerian cricket grow.
