His intervention comes following the Golden Eaglets’ elimination from the WAFU-B U-17 Championship in Burkina Faso, where Nigeria lost 2-1 to Niger Republic before drawing 1-1 with Côte d’Ivoire.

The results ended Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2027 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations and FIFA U-17 World Cup, extending the country’s disappointing run at youth international level.

Mikel believes the solution must begin with a properly organised grassroots system that identifies talented youngsters early and provides a clear pathway to professional football.

The former Chelsea midfielder pointed to Morocco’s investment in football academies as an example Nigeria should study, arguing that sustained development produces better results than short-term interventions.

He particularly emphasised the need to strengthen Nigeria’s U-17 structures, which have historically provided a foundation for the country’s senior national teams.

Mikel also called for changes in football administration, suggesting that respected former internationals such as Austin Jay-Jay Okocha and Nwankwo Kanu should be involved in shaping the game’s future.

He maintained that administrators must prioritise football development over personal interests, with decisions guided by the long-term needs of players and national teams.

His concerns come amid ongoing discussions about reforms within the Nigeria Football Federation following a period of disappointing international results and administrative uncertainty. <Cite ref=”turn905533search3″/>

For Mikel, Nigeria’s five FIFA U-17 World Cup titles demonstrate the country’s football potential, but restoring that success will require consistent investment, credible leadership and a renewed commitment to developing young talent.
