A social media post addressed to Nigerian Barcelona supporters called on them to temporarily put aside their support for the Catalan club and cheer for Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen and Galatasaray.
The message, written in a humorous tone, described supporting the Nigerian forward as a civic duty, adding the slogan, “Country first, club later.”
The post has presented an interesting talking point ahead of the European encounter, as Nigerian football fans face a choice between supporting their favourite foreign club and backing one of their country’s biggest football stars.
Osimhen is expected to lead Galatasaray’s attacking threat against Barcelona in the match scheduled for RAMS Park in Istanbul. The Nigerian striker’s presence adds a local interest for Nigerian viewers, particularly those eager to see him perform against one of Europe’s leading clubs.
However, the post also acknowledged a twist for supporters who may be reluctant to abandon Barcelona, noting that Karim Adeyemi is also associated with the Spanish club.
The playful appeal highlights the divided loyalties that often emerge when Nigerian players come up against clubs with large followings in the country.
For some supporters, backing Osimhen could be an opportunity to show solidarity with the Nigerian international. Others may prefer to remain loyal to Barcelona, regardless of who stands on the opposing side.
The encounter therefore offers more than a contest between two European sides, as the online debate adds a Nigerian angle to the build-up.
With kick-off scheduled for 8pm Nigerian time, supporters will soon find out whether Osimhen can give those backing him another reason to celebrate.
