“From 26th to 30th!” — Super Eagles Suffer FIFA Rankings Blow as Guinea-Bissau Defeat Pushes Nigeria Out of Africa’s Top Five

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have suffered a setback in the latest FIFA Men’s World Rankings, dropping four places from 26th to 30th globally and slipping out of Africa’s top five national teams.

Sports247 reports that the rankings, released on October 7, 2026, reflect a challenging international period for the three-time African champions, whose recent performances have produced mixed results.

Nigeria now occupy sixth position on the African continent, with Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, Algeria and Côte d’Ivoire ranked ahead of them.

The decline represents a disappointing development for the Super Eagles, who will be eager to restore their position among the continent’s leading football nations.

Nigeria’s disappointing 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers appears to have contributed significantly to their latest ranking decline.

The result was particularly damaging given the expectations surrounding the Super Eagles and their ambition to establish greater consistency in international competitions.

Despite recording a 2-1 victory over Madagascar and battling to a 3-3 draw against Russia, Nigeria were unable to maintain their previous position in the global standings.

Across their last three international matches, the Super Eagles recorded one victory, one draw and one defeat.

While the win over Madagascar provided a positive result, the heavy defeat to Guinea-Bissau overshadowed the team’s efforts during the international period.

Nigeria Slip to Sixth in Africa

Nigeria’s drop to sixth position in Africa highlights the increasingly competitive nature of international football on the continent.

Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, Algeria and Côte d’Ivoire currently occupy the five leading positions among African nations, leaving the Super Eagles with work to do to reclaim their place.

For a country with Nigeria’s footballing history and talent pool, maintaining a strong continental ranking remains an important objective.

However, the latest standings underline the need for improved performances and greater consistency, particularly in competitive fixtures.

November Window Offers Opportunity for Recovery

Attention will now turn to the November international window, which provides Nigeria with another opportunity to improve their results and strengthen their position in the rankings.

The Super Eagles will be hoping to build on the positives from their recent performances while addressing the weaknesses exposed during the defeat to Guinea-Bissau.

With the next FIFA Men’s World Rankings update scheduled for November 18, 2026, Nigeria will be targeting results capable of reversing their recent decline.

For the Super Eagles, the message is clear: returning to Africa’s top five will require more than individual talent. Consistency, discipline and positive results must become the foundation of their international performances.
