Former Super Eagles striker and football coach Eddie Dombraye has highlighted the impact of losing key players on Nigerian clubs, explaining how frequent departures can make it difficult for teams to maintain their performance from one season to another.
Speaking during an interview on Sports247’s Inside Naija Sports, Dombraye discussed the challenges facing coaches in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), particularly when players leave after a successful campaign.

According to him, clubs often struggle to maintain their level of performance when several important players depart at the end of a season.
He explained that coaches invest time in developing their teams, teaching players their tactics and building an understanding among the squad. However, when key members leave, managers may have to start the process again with new players.
The former striker noted that replacing experienced players is not always straightforward, as new arrivals need time to understand the coach’s methods and adjust to the team’s style of play.
This situation can create difficulties for clubs that want to build on previous success, especially those competing for domestic honours or places in continental competitions.
Dombraye also acknowledged the financial realities behind players’ decisions to leave. Footballers may receive offers from other clubs that promise better salaries, making it difficult for Nigerian teams to retain their best performers.
The challenge, therefore, extends beyond the technical department, as clubs must also consider their ability to offer competitive financial packages and create conditions that encourage players to stay.
His observations highlight a wider issue for Nigerian football, where squad stability can be important to a club’s long-term development.
For coaches, losing several regular players at once can affect preparations for a new campaign and force changes to tactical plans that were successful in the previous season.
Dombraye’s comments underline the need for clubs to think beyond immediate results and develop strategies that support continuity, player retention and sustainable growth.
As the NPFL continues to attract attention, keeping talented players and building competitive squads remain important challenges for clubs seeking consistent success.
