Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi will captain the Super Eagles when Nigeria face Guinea-Bissau in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying clash in Bissau on Tuesday.
Iwobi is set to take over the captain’s armband from Wilfred Ndidi, who led Nigeria in their opening Group L fixture against Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.

The change comes as Nigeria prepare for a difficult away encounter against the Djurtus, with both sides entering the match on three points after winning their opening qualifiers. Daily Post reported the development ahead of Tuesday’s fixture.
Iwobi played an important role in Nigeria’s 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar on Friday. The 30-year-old midfielder provided the pass that allowed debutant George Ilenikhena to equalise in first-half stoppage time after Madagascar had taken the lead.
Moses Usor then completed Nigeria’s comeback in the 65th minute, just four minutes after coming on as a substitute for Samuel Chukwueze. The result gave the Super Eagles three points at the start of their campaign.
Iwobi also reached another milestone in the Madagascar encounter, making his 102nd appearance for Nigeria. New Telegraph reports that the appearance made him one of the Super Eagles players to have reached the 100-cap mark.
Nigeria will now face a Guinea-Bissau side that also opened its campaign with victory, defeating Tanzania 2-0 away from home. The result means Tuesday’s meeting brings together the two teams currently level on three points in Group L.
Head coach Éric Chelle has stressed that Nigeria will not underestimate the Djurtus, describing them as a strong team and acknowledging the confidence they gained from their win in Tanzania. He said the Super Eagles’ objective is to secure all three points in Bissau.
The match is scheduled for 5pm Nigerian time at the 24 September Stadium in Bissau, with Iwobi set to lead Nigeria out as the Super Eagles look to maintain their winning start to the qualifying campaign.
