Nigeria’s women’s basketball league will crown a new champion this season after defending champions Dolphins failed to qualify for the 2026 Final Eight in Lagos.
The battle for the vacant title is now underway at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Surulere, with eight teams competing for the country’s biggest domestic women’s basketball prize.
Dolphins entered the season as defending champions after defeating FirstBank in the 2025 final but failed to finish among the top four teams in the Atlantic Conference this year.
Their absence removes the possibility of a successful title defence and guarantees that another team will leave Lagos as Nigerian champion when the competition concludes on October 3.
The eight remaining contenders are Nigeria Customs, AS Sky Queens, Titans, Air Warriors, MFM, FirstBank, Victoria Queens and Bayelsa Blue Whales.
They qualified through the Atlantic and Savannah Conferences before advancing to the season-ending tournament.
While established teams remain in contention, the absence of the reigning champions creates an opportunity for the competitive order to change.
MFM enter with relatively recent championship experience after winning consecutive titles in 2023 and 2024, while other teams now have an opportunity to establish themselves at the top of the domestic game.
There is also another prize beyond the championship itself.
Performances during the Final Eight provide Nigerian players with another opportunity to strengthen their cases for greater recognition, with the domestic league historically serving as a pathway towards the national women’s team.
That makes the remaining games significant both collectively and individually.
For teams, the objective is straightforward — take advantage of a tournament that no longer contains the defending champion.
For players, strong performances against the country’s leading domestic opposition provide another opportunity to demonstrate their ability on one of the biggest stages available within Nigerian women’s basketball.
By October 3, the championship trophy will have a new owner.
Dolphins’ absence has already guaranteed that much.
What remains unanswered is whether an established former champion will reclaim the crown or whether the vacancy at the top will provide room for a new force to emerge.
