Al-Ittihad of Saudi Arabia striker, George Osazehmen Ilenikhena, has emerged as a very strong contender to start alongside Venezia of Italy hitman, Akor Adams in Nigeria’s attack versus Madagascar.
Sports247 gathered that Ilenikhena, who was born in Lagos but grew up in France, looks good for a starter’s shirt in Friday’s opening game of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nation’s qualifiers due to his stunning form in training.
With immense physical presence, constant pressing ability and hot shots at goal, the former Royal Antwerp of Belgium forward has apparently played himself into strong contention to feature alongside Adams.
He is set to take full advantage of the absence of Galatasaray of Turkey sensation, Victor Osimhen, who is out with injury until October 11th, which has left an option open in the Eagles’ attack for Friday’s fixture at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
Adams is already considered as Nigeria’s next top striker behind Osimhen, which means his place is almost assured in Eagles’ coach, Eric Sekou Chelle’s preferred 4-4-2 formation and Ilenikhena is now under strong consideration to join the former Sevilla of Spain star upfront.
A credible source disclosed at length, “With the absence of top striker Victor Osimhen, Ilenikhena is making a case to lead the line on Friday against Madagascar in the AFCON 2027 qualifiers.
“Top striker, Victor Osimhen is injured, meaning the coach will have to pick one among the quartet of Akor Adams, Tolu Arokodare, Taiwo Awoniyi and George Ilenikhena in his favourite two-man attack, playing the 4-4-2 system.
“Barring a late change of mind, Chelle will start Ilenikhena in attack, playing behind Adams, who will operate as the main striker. George will be placed in key positions where he can have a clear sight at goal.”
Sports247 gathered further that Chelle is also thinking of the possibility of giving Ilenikhena the opportunity to use his speed, strength and powerful shooting abilities to full advantage ahead of Friday’s game in Uyo.
That would be a golden opportunity for the 20-year-old hitman, who has also previously played for Amiens and AS Monaco of France, to get a glorious debut for Nigeria on home soil.
