Nine-time Nigerian champions Enyimba FC suffered another painful defeat in the NPFL on Wednesday, surrendering a first-half advantage to lose 3-2 to Sporting Lagos in Aba.
Sports247 reports that the result compounds a difficult start to the campaign for the People’s Elephant, who have now suffered back-to-back defeats amid growing concerns surrounding the club.
Enyimba appeared to have taken control of the contest when Stanley Dimgba found the net in the 44th minute, giving the home side a narrow advantage going into the interval.
Sporting Lagos, however, responded strongly after the restart and levelled the contest in the 51st minute.
The visitors completed their comeback when Haruna Hadi struck in the 65th minute before Daniel Aboh added another four minutes later to put Sporting Lagos 3-1 ahead.
Enyimba managed to pull one back through Tobi Iyanda in the 55th minute, but the goal ultimately proved insufficient as Sporting Lagos held on for a memorable away victory.
The defeat will come as another setback for the Aba giants, who will now be under pressure to respond quickly and halt their slide.
The result also provides Sporting Lagos with a significant boost as they continue their NPFL campaign.
The latest meeting between the clubs comes after another historic occasion involving an Enyimba opponent earlier in the season. On Matchday 4, Inter Lagos secured their first-ever NPFL victory, defeating Enyimba 1-0 in Aba on the same day the Lagos club celebrated its third anniversary.
That victory was particularly notable as it came away from home against one of Nigeria’s most decorated clubs.
With another home defeat now added to the record, Enyimba will have plenty to address as the campaign progresses.
For Sporting Lagos, meanwhile, the comeback victory represents a statement of intent and a valuable three points earned on the road.
