The president of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, has restated the governing body’s commitment towards ensuring sustainable growth for the grapplers’ sport in the country.
Sports247 reports that Adeniyi gave the assurance while congratulating one of the country’s officials, Adebiyi Anthony Olusegun, for gaining Level 2 United World Wrestling (UWW) referee certification.
Adeniyi also commended Adebiyi for successfully completing the course during this year’s African Wrestling Championships in Alexandria, Egypt, thereby adding another milestone in his career as a wrestling referee.
Incidentally, Adebiyi’s participation in the course was part of the NWF’s developmental efforts under Adeniyi, who said the federation will continue creating opportunities for Nigerian wrestling referees to achieve international exposure.
In furtherance of their objectives, the NWF’s boss personally sponsored Adebiyi’s participation in the course, as he continues his efforts at strengthening the capacity of Nigerian wrestling officials at national and international levels.
Adeniyi added that the achievement reflects the present board’s vision to invest not only in wrestlers, but also referees, coaches and officials, whose expertise he admitted is essential to the growth of Nigerian wrestling.
He also encouraged young people who are interested in becoming wrestling referees to remain committed and stay focused towards achieving professional development, even as he urged them to seek opportunities to represent Nigeria on the international stage.
The NWF president averred, “This achievement is a clear demonstration of our commitment to building a strong and sustainable wrestling system in Nigeria.
“Our focus extends beyond athletes to include referees, coaches, and other technical officials, because their competence is vital to the continued growth of the sport.
“We are delighted with Anthony’s progress and proud to see him attain this important international qualification. I encourage him to remain dedicated and continue striving for excellence.
“The sky is truly his starting point. I urge other young and aspiring referees to embrace opportunities for development and prepare themselves to represent Nigeria with distinction.”
Sports247 adds that Adebiyi also disclosed his appreciation to the NWF president for sponsoring him to attend the course, which he described as a huge opportunity to step forward in his career and thanked Adeniyi for investing in Nigeria’s wrestling technical hands.
