Super Eagles midfielder Kelechi Nwakali has completed his move to Cypriot First Division side Omonia 29M, joining fellow Nigerian international Francis Uzoho at the club.
The 28-year-old midfielder signed for the Cyprus outfit after leaving English League One club Barnsley, bringing an end to his spell in England. Omonia 29M officially announced his arrival on September 1.
Nwakali, who plays in central midfield, is understood to have agreed a one-year contract that will keep him at the club until the end of the 2026/27 season.
The move represents a fresh opportunity for the former Golden Eaglets captain, who burst onto the international scene spectacularly in 2015 when he helped Nigeria win the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile.
Nwakali was named the tournament’s Golden Ball winner, earning recognition as the competition’s outstanding player and subsequently securing a move to English Premier League giants Arsenal.
He later had spells with MVV Maastricht, VVV-Venlo, Porto B, Huesca, Alcorcón, Ponferradina and Chaves before joining Barnsley.
His departure from Barnsley followed a mutual termination of his contract, allowing him to make the switch to Cyprus as a free agent.
Nwakali now joins Uzoho at Omonia 29M, with the Super Eagles goalkeeper having completed his own move to the club just days earlier after leaving Omonia Nicosia.
The Nigerian midfielder has already arrived in Cyprus and is expected to begin preparations with his new teammates as Omonia 29M continues its campaign in the Cypriot top flight.
For Nwakali, the move offers another chance to rebuild momentum in his club career and demonstrate the quality that made him one of Africa’s most highly-rated young midfielders a decade ago.
Now in the Eastern Mediterranean, the former Golden Eaglets star will be hoping his new chapter in Cyprus brings regular football, strong performances and a route back into the Super Eagles picture.
