FIFA badge-licensed referee Mr. Olajide Olayinka has offered an expert explanation of the controversial red card incident during the Seamoriow FC versus Dazzle FC encounter, where an initial dismissal was subsequently overturned following a review.
Speaking on the incident, Olayinka first commended the match officials for their efforts, while highlighting the growing importance of technology in modern football officiating, Sports247 gathered.
“Firstly, I will appreciate the effort of the match officials. One of the issues we face in Africa is technology,” Olayinka said.
According to the FIFA-licensed referee, technological support has increasingly become an important tool for improving the accuracy and consistency of refereeing decisions, particularly in situations involving major incidents.
“Technology has been aiding the performance of match officials in other countries,” he added.
Explaining the incident, Olayinka said the referee initially issued a red card based on the assessment that a DOGSO (Denying an Obvious Goal-Scoring Opportunity) offence had occurred.
A DOGSO situation generally arises when a player commits an offence that prevents an opponent from having an obvious opportunity to score.
However, following a review of the incident, the decision was reconsidered after it was determined that the goalkeeper involved had not committed an offence.
“The referee issued a red card for a DOGSO, denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity, and after review, the goalkeeper involved had not committed any offence,” Olayinka explained.
As a result, the initial decision was overturned and the game continued without the goalkeeper being sent off.
The incident has generated discussion among football followers, particularly over the difficulty of making split-second decisions in high-pressure situations.
Olayinka’s explanation highlights the important distinction between an initial on-field assessment and a subsequent review when additional evidence is available.
While technology can assist match officials in reaching more accurate decisions, its availability remains uneven across football competitions, particularly in Africa.
The referee therefore used the incident to underline the need for continued development and investment in officiating infrastructure across the continent.
The episode also demonstrates the complexity of modern refereeing, where officials must make immediate judgments while remaining prepared to reassess decisions when new information becomes available.
For Olayinka, the focus should ultimately remain on supporting referees and improving the systems available to them.
As football continues to embrace technology, incidents such as the Seamoriow–Dazzle FC controversy underline how additional support can help officials correct decisions and protect the integrity of the game.
