Imo State commissioner for sports, Honourable Obinna Onyeocha has described the ongoing 1st Late Dan Anyiam U-15 Memorial Football Tournament as a productive venture that ‘is about investin’ in youth talents’ across various communities and beyond.
Sports247 reports that, while declaring open the competition sponsored by Anderson Anyiam, CEO of WorldBest Pharmaceuticals, at Old Township Stadium, Tetlow Road, Owerri, Onyeocha stated that it is designed to honour the memory of the former national team player and coach.
He added that, apart from honouring him as Nigeria’s first indigenous coach of the national team, the competition is also a platform for young footballers to be discovered, nurtured and exposed to greater opportunities, while showcasing their skills in a very conducive environment amidst excitement and fanfare.
Onyeocha also commended the sponsor for investing in youth development through football, then urged the participating players and teams to maintain discipline and good conduct throughout the competition, as it is a launchpad that can turn them into future stars.
“This is a very good initiative, because it is about investing in our youths and discovering talents. It is in line with the policy of His Excellency, Governor Hope Uzodimma, to promote youth development and sports in Imo State.
“I want the players to conduct themselves very well. Some of the talents that will be discovered here may become great stars in the nearest future,” enthused Onyeocha, who noted that the opening matches confirmed that 1st Dan Anyiam Memorial Cup will be very memorable.
