Super Falcons defender Glory Ogbonna has declared that Nigeria will continue to fight with determination and resilience as the team’s ultimate objective remains retaining the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title and preserving its status as Africa’s champions.
The Super Falcons reignited their campaign with a spirited 1-0 victory over Zambia, overcoming the challenge of playing with 10 players for much of the encounter to revive their hopes of progressing to the knockout stage.
Reflecting on the victory, Ogbonna admitted the players knew they had to produce a strong response following the disappointing opening defeat to Malawi.
“After the loss to Malawi, we knew we had to respond. Everyone understood the importance of the Zambia game, and we were determined to show our fighting spirit,” Ogbonna said.
The defender praised her teammates for their character after the Super Falcons held on for victory despite being reduced to 10 players before halftime.
“We showed resilience and tenacity. Playing with one player less wasn’t easy, but everyone worked hard for each other because we all share the same goal of winning this trophy and remaining champions of Africa,” she added.
Nigeria’s victory over the Copper Queens has put the defending champions back in contention for a place in the quarter-finals after the opening-day setback against Malawi.
The Super Falcons will now turn their attention to Wednesday’s decisive Group C clash against Egypt in Rabat, where victory would secure qualification for the knockout stage and keep alive Nigeria’s bid for a record-extending 11th WAFCON title.
