As reactions continue trailing Nigeria’s seventh-place finish at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Honourable Bukola Olopade, has opined that the contingent ‘competed with courage, honour and determination.’
Sports247 reports that, while many critics expressed disappointment that the country could not get victory in blue ribbon events like men’s 100m, women’s 100m hurdles and both 4x100m relays, Olopade insisted it was a successful outing, as Nigeria placed first among all African countries present.
Olopade went on to shower accolades on the entire contingent, praising them all for what he referred to as their impressive performances in Glasgow, with a verdict that they brought another level of national pride to Nigeria with their haul of 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals
He took to social media to formally commend the athletes, coaches and officials for their efforts and commitment, while also asserting that the medals represent more than sporting success.
He reasoned further that, beyond the glory in sports that the 24 medals represent, they also serve as another memorable milestone in the transformation of Nigerian sports under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Olopade posted on X, “I am immensely proud of every athlete, coach and official who represented Nigeria. You competed with courage, honour and determination; proving once again that the Nigerian spirit can never be broken. Beyond the medals, you inspired millions of Nigerians.
“(You have) restored confidence in our sporting future and showed the world that Nigerian sports are on a steady path of renewal and excellence. Our 24 medals are not just a reflection of talent, but also of discipline, resilience and commitment to fly our nation’s flag with pride.”
