Team Nigeria’s impressive campaign at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games gathered even more momentum on Tuesday as Patience Okon-George and Esther Elo Joseph booked their places in the women’s 400m semi-finals with confident performances at Scotstoun Stadium.
Fresh from the nation’s historic exploits in weightlifting and wheelchair basketball, the Nigerian quarter-milers delivered another encouraging display, keeping alive the country’s hopes of adding more medals on the athletics track.

Veteran Patience Okon-George qualified from Heat Two, clocking 53.27 seconds to finish fourth behind Canada’s Lauren Gale (51.59), Scotland’s Nicole Yeargin (52.44) and Jamaica’s Leah Anderson (52.74). The experienced Nigerian comfortably secured one of the automatic qualification spots.
Moments later, Esther Elo Joseph joined her compatriot in the semi-finals after producing another composed run in Heat Three. Joseph crossed the line in 52.82 seconds to finish third behind Botswana’s Obakeng Kamberuka (51.54) and Jamaica’s Shana Kaye Anderson (52.71), sealing Nigeria’s second qualification of the morning.
The double qualification is another major boost for Team Nigeria, whose athletes have enjoyed an outstanding Games so far.
The athletics team has already produced a string of impressive performances, with Favour Ashe, Nicholas Fakorede, Kayinsola Ajayi, Miracle Ezechukwu, Blessing Ogundiran, and Rosemary Chukwuma all advancing in their respective sprint events.
Combined with Nigeria’s gold rush in weightlifting and the historic qualification of the women’s wheelchair basketball team for the quarter-finals, the latest success further underlines Team Nigeria’s growing momentum in Glasgow.
With both Okon-George and Esther Elo Joseph now through to the semi-finals, Nigerian fans will be hoping the duo can take another giant step towards the podium as the battle for Commonwealth Games medals intensifies.
