Team Nigeria’s quest for another medal at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games suffered a heartbreaking setback on Monday as Favour Agboro produced a courageous performance but narrowly missed out on the podium in the men’s 65kg weightlifting event.
Agboro finished fourth overall with a combined lift of 279kg, made up of 122kg in the snatch and 157kg in the clean and jerk, ending his campaign just three kilograms short of a bronze medal.
The Nigerian lifter remained firmly in contention throughout the competition and entered the closing stages knowing that one successful final lift could transform his fortunes.
With the pressure mounting, Agboro boldly called for 160kg on his last clean and jerk attempt—a lift that would have propelled him onto the podium and secured another medal for Team Nigeria.
He powered the weight above his head, drawing cheers from the Nigerian supporters inside the arena, and for a brief moment it appeared the comeback had been completed.
But jubilation quickly turned to heartbreak.
After reviewing the attempt, the judges ruled it a “no lift”, determining that Agboro had failed to maintain control of the barbell at the completion of the movement.
The decision left the Nigerian visibly disappointed as his hopes of claiming bronze slipped away in dramatic fashion.
Despite the cruel ending, Agboro’s display was one of determination, courage and resilience. Rather than settling for a safer weight, he chose to chase a medal with an ambitious final attempt, a decision that reflected the fearless spirit that has characterised Team Nigeria’s campaign in Glasgow.
His fourth-place finish means Nigeria narrowly missed adding another medal to its growing tally, but Agboro’s performance earned admiration for the manner in which he battled until the very last lift.
