Team Nigeria’s quest for athletics medals at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games has received a significant boost following the arrival of two of the country’s biggest track and field stars, Tobi Amusan and Temitope Adeshina.
The duo touched down in Glasgow on Saturday and immediately joined the Nigerian contingent ahead of their respective events, raising expectations of more podium finishes for the country after an impressive start to the Games.
World Record holder in women’s 100m hurdles champion Tobi Amusan arrived in Scotland in high spirits and is set to begin the defence of the title she won in Birmingham in 2022.
Widely regarded as one of the world’s finest hurdlers, the Nigerian star will be aiming to retain her crown and add another gold medal to her growing collection of international honours.
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria shared a confident message following her arrival, declaring that the “Tobi Express” is ready to light up Glasgow once again as she prepares for another memorable campaign.
Also arriving in Glasgow was high jump sensation Temitope Adeshina, who wasted no time settling into competition mode.
After completing her accreditation shortly after landing, the Nigerian record holder held her first training session in preparation for the women’s high jump event.
Adeshina heads into the competition as one of Nigeria’s brightest medal prospects.
The youngster continues to rewrite history, having already established herself as the highest-jumping Nigerian woman of all time.
Her consistent rise on the international stage has made her one of Africa’s leading high jump athletes and a genuine contender for a Commonwealth Games medal.
Their arrival comes at a crucial time for Team Nigeria, which has already enjoyed a remarkable opening to the Games. Nigeria finished Day One with six medals, including three gold medals, all won in para powerlifting.
With athletics set to commence, expectations are high that Amusan, Adeshina and other members of the athletics team can build on that momentum and further boost Nigeria’s position on the medals table.
