Team Nigeria boxer Akintola David has declared that he is travelling to the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, with only one target in mind, winning a gold medal for Nigeria.
Competing in the men’s 80kg (middleweight) division, the Nigerian pugilist believes months of intensive training and preparation have put him in the right frame of mind to challenge some of the best boxers across the Commonwealth.
With boxing historically one of Nigeria’s strongest medal-producing sports at the Games, Akintola says he is determined to uphold that tradition and add his name to the country’s growing list of Commonwealth champions.
“My target is to win the gold medal. I believe in my ability, and I have worked hard to prepare for this competition,” Akintola said.
The boxer expressed confidence in his physical condition and technical readiness, insisting that his belief has been strengthened by the quality of preparation provided ahead of the Games.
According to him, representing Nigeria on one of the biggest international sporting stages is a privilege that comes with enormous responsibility.
“I am optimistic about my chances because I know the work I have put in. I believe in my strength and I believe I can make Nigeria proud,” he added.
Nigeria has a rich tradition in Commonwealth boxing, producing several champions and medalists over the years, and the National Sports Commission (NSC) will be hoping the current crop of fighters can continue that legacy in Glasgow.
The country’s boxing team heads into the Games with renewed optimism following an extended training programme designed to prepare athletes for the intensity of elite international competition.
For Akintola, however, the challenge goes beyond simply participating.
The middleweight star knows every bout will demand discipline, courage and composure, but insists he is ready to embrace the pressure that comes with carrying Nigeria’s hopes.
As the countdown to the Games continues, Akintola remains focused on one mission—turning months of sacrifice into Commonwealth gold and giving Nigerian boxing another moment to celebrate on the international stage.
