Super Falcons midfielder Christy Ucheibe has thrown her support behind the continued inclusion of Asisat Oshoala and Francisca Ordega in Nigeria’s squad for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), dismissing growing calls for the experienced duo to step aside.
The debate intensified after head coach Justine Madugu named both veterans in his 25-player squad for the tournament in Morocco, a decision that divided supporters, with some fans arguing it was time for younger players to take over.
However, Ucheibe believes the criticism is unfair, insisting that both players continue to earn their places through their performances at club level and the invaluable leadership they bring to the national team.
“They are still very important members of this team. Their performances for their clubs show they deserve to be here, and their experience is something every successful team needs,” Ucheibe said.
Oshoala, a six-time CAF Women’s Player of the Year, and Ordega, one of Nigeria’s most experienced internationals, are among the senior figures expected to help the Super Falcons defend the continental title they won in Morocco last year.
Their selection reflects Madugu’s decision to combine proven winners with an emerging generation of talent led by players such as Jennifer Echegini, Deborah Abiodun and Ucheibe herself.
While questions have been raised over relying on experienced players, Ucheibe believes tournament football demands more than just youthful energy.
“Experience counts in competitions like WAFCON. They’ve played on the biggest stages, they’ve won titles, and they know how to handle pressure. That can make a huge difference for the team,” she added.
Nigeria, the record 10-time African champions, will head to Morocco aiming to successfully defend their WAFCON crown, with Madugu’s squad blending established stars and rising talents in pursuit of another continental triumph.
As discussions over squad selection continue, Ucheibe’s message is clear: reputations alone do not earn call-ups, and in her view, Oshoala and Ordega have shown enough through their performances and leadership to remain key figures in the Super Falcons’ quest for another African title.
