Nigeria will face Cameroon, South Sudan and Cape Verde in a crucial series of qualifiers, with the results expected to play a significant role in determining the country’s chances of returning to basketball’s biggest global tournament.
Speaking ahead of the games, the experienced centre insisted there is no room for complacency despite the quality of the opposition, stressing that the players are fully focused on completing the qualifying window with a perfect record.
“Our goal is simpl, we want to win all three games. That’s the mentality in the camp, and everyone understands what is at stake,” Mike Eric said.
The veteran also praised newly appointed head coach David Fizdale, saying the former NBA coach has quickly earned the respect of the players by assembling a competitive squad from Nigeria’s wealth of basketball talent spread across Europe, the United States and domestic leagues.
Eric believes the blend of experienced internationals and emerging stars has created healthy competition within the squad, something he says will benefit D’Tigers as they seek to return to the World Cup.
“Coach David Fizdale has brought together a very strong group of players. Nigeria has so much talent, and everyone is pushing each other to earn their place in the team,” he added.
The qualifying window represents an important test for Nigeria, which is seeking to re-establish itself among Africa’s basketball elite after missing out on recent major international competitions. With South Sudan emerging as one of the continent’s strongest teams and Cameroon and Cape Verde continuing to make significant progress, every game is expected to be fiercely contested
Despite the challenge ahead, Eric remains confident that D’Tigers have the quality and experience to achieve their objective without allowing pressure to become a distraction.
“We respect every opponent, but if we play to our potential, we believe we can win all three games and book our place at the World Cup,” he said.
With preparations intensifying ahead of the qualifying window, D’Tigers will hope the arrival of Fizdale and the return of several experienced players can spark a new era for Nigerian basketball as they pursue a place at the next FIBA Basketball World Cup.
