Nwabali recently rejoined the South African club after uncertainty over his future following interest from clubs in Europe and the Middle East. While many expected the Nigerian international to secure a move abroad after his impressive performances for club and country, Afelokhai believes prioritising regular football was the right decision.
According to the former Kano Pillars and Enyimba goalkeeper, no club will be willing to invest in a goalkeeper who spends extended periods without competitive action.
“Returning to Chippa United is the best decision Stanley Nwabali could have made. No serious club wants to sign a goalkeeper who isn’t playing week in, week out,” Afelokhai said.
The former Super Eagles shot-stopper suggested Nwabali had recognised the risks associated with staying away from regular football and deserved credit for retracing his steps in order to safeguard both his club career and his place in the national team.
With Nigeria preparing for crucial international assignments, including the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, maintaining consistent playing time has become increasingly important for players hoping to retain their places in Eric Chelle’s squad.
Afelokhai also applauded Chippa United’s management for welcoming Nwabali back, saying the South African club demonstrated professionalism by giving the goalkeeper another opportunity to continue his development.
“I also commend Chippa United for giving him another chance. It shows they appreciate his quality and understand what he brings to the team,” he added.
Nwabali has established himself as Nigeria’s undisputed first-choice goalkeeper since his outstanding performances at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where he played a pivotal role in helping the Super Eagles reach the final and was widely regarded as one of the tournament’s best goalkeepers.
As competition for places in the national team intensifies, Afelokhai believes Nwabali’s return to regular club football will not only benefit his personal career but also strengthen the Super Eagles ahead of the demanding international calendar that lies ahead.
