Michael Emenalo to the NFF? Ex-Super Eagles Star Urges Federation to Make Bold Move

Former Super Eagles midfielder Abiodun Obafemi has called on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to make what he describes as a “game-changing” decision by bringing renowned football executive Michael Emenalo into a key leadership role.

Obafemi believes Emenalo’s wealth of experience at the highest level of world football makes him one of the most qualified Nigerians to help reshape the future of the country’s football administration.

The former Super Eagles star pointed to Emenalo’s remarkable career, which includes successful spells as Technical Director at Chelsea FC, where he played a key role in the club’s recruitment strategy and trophy-winning era, before becoming Sporting Director and later Chief Executive Officer of the Saudi Pro League.

“The NFF shouldn’t wait for Michael Emenalo to indicate interest. They should approach him because people with his level of experience don’t come around often,” Obafemi said.

According to Obafemi, Nigerian football needs more administrators with global football experience, especially at a time when the Super Eagles are rebuilding under head coach Eric Chelle and the country is seeking long-term reforms following its failure to qualify for consecutive FIFA World Cups.

He argued that Emenalo’s expertise in football governance, player development and elite club management could help modernise the federation and improve decision-making.

“He’s one of the most qualified Nigerians in world football administration. His experience at Chelsea and in Saudi Arabia speaks for itself, and Nigerian football would benefit immensely from his knowledge,” he added.

Emenalo, a former Super Eagles defender, is widely regarded as one of Africa’s most accomplished football executives, having been instrumental in Chelsea’s recruitment model during one of the club’s most successful periods.

Obafemi believes attracting respected football administrators of Emenalo’s calibre would send a strong signal that the NFF is serious about implementing lasting reforms and restoring Nigeria’s position as one of Africa’s football powerhouses.
