Captain of Nigeria’s women’s wheelchair basketball team, Ijigbamigbe Gbemisola, has declared that Team Nigeria is ready to spring a surprise at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, insisting the squad is determined to return home with a medal despite being considered underdogs.
With Team Nigeria putting the finishing touches to its preparations in Aberdeen, Scotland, ahead of the Games in Glasgow, Gbemisola said the players are motivated by the opportunity to prove themselves against some of the Commonwealth’s strongest teams.
Wheelchair basketball is one of the sports where Nigeria is looking to make a significant impact as the National Sports Commission continues its drive to improve the country’s performances across para sports.
“We’re confident we can challenge for a medal. A lot of people may not expect much from us, but we’re ready to prove them wrong,” Gbemisola said.
The experienced captain praised the team’s preparation and the support received from the National Sports Commission (NSC), noting that the players have worked tirelessly to ensure they are physically and mentally ready for the competition.
She acknowledged that Nigeria may not be among the favourites but believes the team’s unity, determination and fighting spirit can make the difference.
“Being underdogs doesn’t bother us. Sometimes that’s the best position to be in because it motivates you to work even harder and surprise people,” she added.
Gbemisola also called on Nigerians to continue supporting Team Nigeria throughout the Games, expressing confidence that the country’s athletes would reward the faith shown in them with strong performances.
As the countdown to the Commonwealth Games continues, the wheelchair basketball captain remains optimistic that Nigeria can exceed expectations and add another memorable chapter to the nation’s proud history in para sports.
