The President of Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF), Dr Ibrahim Abdul has come out with a strong promise that the body’s array of lifters selected for this year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland will ‘represent the country with distinction.
Sports247 reports that Dr Abdul gave the pledge after the arrival of the Weightlifting team’s first batch in Aberdeen, Scotland, to begin the final phase of preparations for the Games, where he expressed confidence in their ability to make Nigeria proud.
Abdul pointed out that the lifters passed through a very thorough and rigourouse first phase of their preparations in Abuja, with the Aberdeen camp meant to help them perfect any loose angles during their three-week pre-competition training before heading to the Games’ Village in Glasgow.
While affirming that the selected lifters, who he said have been properly groomed by their coaches, will put up a brilliant outing for Nigeria, Abdul also commended officials of the National Sports Commission (NSC) for backing the team’s preparations with unwavering efforts and inputs.
“We sincerely appreciate the chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and the Director General, Honourable Bukola Olopade, for providing the enabling environment that made both the closed camping in Abuja and this foreign training possible.
“Their support has ensured our athletes have access to modern training facilities and equipment, which will greatly enhance their preparations for the Games. I am confident that our weightlifters will represent Nigeria with distinction at the Commonwealth Games.
“They worked extremely hard during the Abuja camping programme, and this overseas training camp will further sharpen their readiness for the competition,” Abdul said, after the delegation led by NWF technical director, Sefiya Onubaye, touched down on Saturday morning.
