Olopade Denies Favouritism, Sentiments In Choice Of Oluwafemiayo To Captain Team Nigeria At Commonwealth Games

The director-general of National Sports Commission (NSC), Honourable Bukola Olopade has denied any favouritism or sentiments in the choice of para-athlete, Folashade Oluwafemiayo as Nigeria’s captain for this year’s Commonwealth Games.

Sports247 reports that Olopade’s clarification comes on the heel of insinuations that Nigerian administrators picked Oluwafemiayo as team leader in order to gain international attention and public favour for recognising the values of inclusiveness.

However, in contrast with speculation that the NSC and Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) are also currying international favour through the choice of a physically challenged athlete to captain the country’s contingent, Olopade stressed that it was based on merit.

Olopade pointed out that Oluwafemiayo is a two-time Paralympic champion and multiple world medallist, hence a deliberate decision was reached by Nigeria’s sports administrators to appoint her as team leader based on her achievements and exemplary character.

He disclosed further that Oluwafemiayo has established herself as one of the world’s finest para-powerlifters, with several Paralympic, World Championship, and Commonwealth titles achieved, as well as multiple global records to her name.

The NSC’s DG added that Oluwafemiayo’s remarkable consistency on the international stage has made her a symbol of excellence in sports, while her choice also recognises the outstanding contributions of Nigeria’s para-athletes at major competitions.

“We are intentional about the selection of our team captain. Folashade Oluwafemiayo is the ideal choice, having consistently demonstrated exceptional professionalism, resilience and excellence throughout her distinguished career.

“She is a multiple gold medalist, a former world champion and one of Nigeria’s most decorated para-athletes. Her leadership qualities and winning mentality make her an inspiration to every member of Team Nigeria,” Olopade expatiated.

Sports247 reports further that Nigeria’s para-athletes have over the years been the country’s most successful competitors, with several medals won by them at the Paralympic Games, Commonwealth Games, African Games and World Championships.
