Defender Iwundu Chidozie has credited the Lagos experience and tactical influence of Rangers International head coach Fidelis Ilechukwu as a key factor behind the club’s crucial 2-1 victory over Ikorodu City FC that sealed the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League title.

Iwundu Chidozie played a huge part in Rangers winning the the title.
The central defender scored a total of nine goals , coming from free kicks and corner kicks said Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu popularity in Lagos helped the team in a way as Rangers had numerous Lagos based supporters in the stadium who came to support Rangers because of Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu.
Speaking with Sports247 after the dramatic final-day triumph in Lagos, the Rangers centre-back described the encounter as tense from start to finish but praised his teammates for their preparation, composure and belief.
Rangers secured the NPFL crown after overcoming Ikorodu City away from home, with the result confirming the Enugu club as champions for a record-equalling ninth league title.
According to Chidozie, the Flying Antelopes approached the decisive fixture with the same mentality they had maintained throughout the season.
“We came prepared for this game. We have been working from match day one, so today was not going to be different,” he said.
“We put in every effort to get the maximum three points. It is never easy to come to another team’s home and get a win, but we believed in ourselves, worked on our techniques and converted our chances.”
The defender also acknowledged the strong backing the team received from the Enugu State Government and the club management ahead of the title-deciding clash.
“The motivation was top-notch from the Governor of Enugu State, His Excellency Peter Mbah,” Chidozie stated.
“He also praised Rangers General Manager Barrister Amobi Ezeaku for constantly motivating the players throughout the campaign.
“That motivation was massive, so we had to come out and give them the joy they deserved,” he added.
Chidozie further highlighted the influence of coach Ilechukwu, who previously built his reputation in Lagos during his successful spell with MFM FC.
The defender explained that the coach’s familiarity with the Lagos football environment and fan base played a major role in Rangers’ success against Ikorodu City.
“He is a coach and a father figure who does not joke with any game, even if it is a friendly match,” Chidozie said.
“He has motivated us from match day one, and today’s game was not different from the others.”
Speaking specifically on Ilechukwu’s Lagos roots and popularity, Chidozie added:
“Very well. If you look at the atmosphere and the supporters, many of them are Lagosians and they came because of the coach. The coach played a very big role in the game.”
The victory capped off a memorable campaign for Rangers International, who showed resilience and consistency throughout the season to reclaim the NPFL title in dramatic fashion.
