A new chapter in Nigerian grassroots sports development was officially opened in Lagos as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development, Hon. Adeyinka Anthony Adeboye, joined hundreds of young basketball talents, coaches, scouts, parents, and stakeholders for the groundbreaking SSA–Templar-Adrenale National Basketball Combine held at the newly renovated Dolphins Basketball Court.
The atmosphere was electric as over 200 elite young basketball prospects from across Nigeria gathered for what many described as a historic and defining moment for grassroots sports development in the country.
The combine, organized through the partnership between the Office of the SSA and the Templar-Adrenale Athlete Development Initiative (A5), is the first of its kind under the Presidency and is designed to identify, develop, and expose talented young Nigerian athletes to international-standard opportunities.
Speaking at the event, Adeboye described the initiative as a bold and necessary step toward building a sustainable pathway for Nigerian athletes from the grassroots to the global stage.
“We need to do more for grassroots sports in Nigeria. Mr. President loves the youth and is passionate about their future, especially through sports development. This initiative is about creating opportunities and building the next generation of champions.”
The SSA assured participants that the Federal Government remains committed to supporting youth-focused sports programmes capable of transforming lives and opening global opportunities for Nigerian talents.
“I am happy with this partnership, and I want every athlete here to know that the government believes in them. We must continue to build a system where talents are not just discovered but properly developed.”
Adeboye further encouraged the athletes to remain disciplined, focused, and committed to their dreams, expressing confidence that many of them would eventually represent Nigeria internationally.
“Some of the future NBA stars, national team players, and global sports ambassadors of Nigeria are on this court today. This is only the beginning.”
For many of the participants, the combine represented far more than a basketball event—it was a life-changing opportunity.
Several players described the experience as inspiring and transformational, while parents and guardians praised the initiative for creating a platform capable of exposing young athletes to opportunities beyond Nigeria.
According to the organizers, only 14 outstanding athletes will emerge from this first phase to enter the Templar-Adrenale High-Performance Development Program, where they will receive elite-level training, mentorship, educational support, NIL investment opportunities, and international exposure.
Officials also revealed that the partnership between the SSA’s office and A5 is backed by a long-term 10-year development agreement, aimed at creating a sustainable athlete development structure not just for basketball, but across multiple sports nationwide.
The vision, according to stakeholders, is to establish a clear pipeline capable of transforming grassroots talents into globally competitive professionals.
Adeboye emphasized that the initiative aligns perfectly with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s broader vision for youth empowerment and sports development.
“This administration understands the power of sports. We are not just talking about development—we are creating real platforms and opportunities that can change lives.”
With the overwhelming turnout, strong government backing, and growing excitement surrounding the combine, many observers now believe the event could mark the beginning of a new era in Nigerian sports—one where grassroots talents are intentionally identified, nurtured, and prepared for global success.
And as the first basketballs bounced on the Dolphins Court under the watchful eyes of coaches and scouts, one message echoed loudly through Lagos:
Nigeria’s next generation of stars has officially taken its first step.
