Former Super Eagles defender Sam Sodje has challenged Nigeria’s players and the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation to use the 2027 AFCON qualifiers as an opportunity to restore supporters’ confidence in the national team.
Reacting to Nigeria’s qualifying draw, Sodje warned against underrating any opponent despite perceptions that the group appears favourable on paper.

“These games must be taken seriously,” Sodje said.
According to the former defender, African football has evolved significantly, with so-called smaller nations becoming more competitive and organized.
“There are no easy games anymore,” he implied.
Sodje stressed that the Super Eagles must show fans they have learnt important lessons from recent disappointments, particularly the failure to qualify for the FIFA World Cup.
“This is the time to respond properly,” he noted.
The former international also called on the players to demonstrate greater ambition and commitment throughout the qualification campaign.
“The fans deserve more,” he added.
Sodje acknowledged the loyalty and patience supporters have continued showing toward the national team despite difficult moments in recent years.
“The supporters have stayed faithful,” he stressed.
Nigeria’s AFCON qualification campaign is expected to attract huge attention as the Super Eagles attempt to rebuild confidence and consistency.
“This team still has quality,” many football observers believe.
For Sodje, however, quality alone is not enough without the right mentality.
“Ambition and seriousness are crucial,” he said.
For the former Super Eagles star, the message is clear.
Respect every opponent.
Play with hunger.
And reward the faith of Nigerian fans.
Because rebuilding trust begins with performances, commitment, and results on the pitch.
