One of the Nigerian martial arts experts who recently received merit awards from World Taekwondo Jidokwan Federation, Grand Master Sunday Koffi Akani has revealed that he shed tears during the presentation because he was overflowing with joy.
Sports247 reports that Akani was decorated during Nigeria Taekwondo Federation National Open Trials at Alake Sports Centre, Abeokuta, for attaining the prestigious 7th Dan rank, alongside Grand Master Dominic Asuquo Bassey.
The recognition took place immediately after this year’s Kukkiwon Dan Grading Test, following which Akani expressed gratitude to God for being alive to witness the moment and for him to personally receive the recognition after decades of commitment to the sport.
During the ceremony, World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) representative and the president of World Taekwondo Masters Union, Grand Master Kim Lee described both Nigerian awardees as symbols of dedication, who deserve honour and celebration.
While giving advice to the younger generation, Akani urged emergent martial arts practitioners to remain focused, disciplined and fully committed to their development in the sport rather than be driven by financial rewards.
Akani retorted, “You may not understand the reason behind my tears. It is because this honour is coming while I am still alive to receive it with my own hands after 54 years of hard work.
“By the grace of God, I still train at Ikoyi Club in Lagos, and I remain grateful to everyone who has supported me, especially the president of Nigeria Taekwondo Federation, Grand Master Tayo Popoola for all the efforts being made.”
