Former Nigeria international Duke Udi has called for a coordinated transition process within the Super Eagles setup, warning that several senior players are gradually approaching the latter stages of their careers.
Speaking on the future of the national team, Udi stressed that planning for generational change cannot be delayed.
“The transition must start now,” he said.
According to the former midfielder, many key members of the current squad are already nearing the age where performance levels may slowly begin to decline.
“Some of them are approaching 30,” he implied.
Udi argued that younger players should gradually be introduced into the squad so they can gain experience before the older generation steps aside completely.
“You must integrate them early,” he noted.
The former international pointed to Spain national football team as an example of how successful transitions are managed properly.
“Spain did it very well,” he added.
He explained that younger players in Spain were introduced steadily, allowing them to mature and gain confidence alongside experienced stars before eventually taking over fully.
“That’s the ideal model,” he stressed.
For Udi, waiting until senior players retire before rebuilding can create instability and inconsistency within national teams.
“You don’t rebuild overnight,” he said.
Nigeria continues to search for the right balance between maintaining experienced leaders and developing future stars.
For Udi, the message is clear.
Start the transition early.
Trust young talents gradually.
And prepare for the future before change becomes unavoidable.
Because successful football nations plan ahead long before a generation fades away.
