The President of Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF), Dr Ibrahim Abdul has hailed the historic feat achieved by the country’s top female lifter, Liadi Taiwo and declared emphatically that it is not just a personal achievement.
Sports247 reports Dr Abdul’s commendation came after Taiwo excelled in Apia, Samoa with three silver medals at the 2026 Oceania Weightlifting Championship.
He reckoned that Liadi had further etched her name in gold at the competition, which holds alongside the Universal Weightlifting Cup and Commonwealth Championships.
While noting that Taiwo competed against over 500 lifters from more than 70 countries, Abdul added that her performance reaffirmed Nigeria’s growth in global weightlifting and status on the international stage.
Abdul added that her achievement reflects discipline, focus and proper preparation, which he said are values she gained from the NWF’s commitment to excellence and athlete development.
“This is a proud moment for Nigeria and for our federation. Liadi Taiwo has once again demonstrated the strength, focus, and quality that we continue to nurture in our athletes. Her performance is inspiring and shows what is possible when dedication meets the right support system.
“We are deliberate about creating opportunities for our lifters to compete at the highest level, and results like this validate our efforts. Liadi’s medals are not just personal achievements; they are victories for Nigerian sports and a motivation for upcoming athletes,” Abdul submitted.
Sports247 gathered further that Taiwo secured silver in the snatch with 105kg, followed by another silver in clean and jerk at 135kg, which combined gave her a total of 240kg to complete three podium finishes in the women’s 77kg category.
