Fast-rising Nigerian-born heavyweight, Moses Itauma emerged as Great Britain’s young boxer of the year at the prestigious British Boxing Board of Control awards, but former champ, Anthony Olaseni Oluwafemi Joshua was not listed.
Sports247 reports further that while nothing was mentioned about Joshua, World Boxing Organisation (WBO) current heavyweight champion, Fabio Wardley was named Boxer of The Year, while Oleksandr Usyk won Overseas Boxer of the Year.
The expert verdict is that, as Joshua heads for the twilight of his career, one of his most touted successors is Itauma, and the youngster’s rising status has been authenticated with his emergence as British Boxing Writers Young Boxer of Year.
The award comes though Itauma was only in the ring for three rounds last year, as his couple of bouts both ended pretty early, with stunning knock out victories over Mike Balogun as well as former world title challenger, Dillian Whyte.
Sports247 reports that Ennko Moses Itauma was born in Slovakia in the town of Kežmarok to a Nigerian father and Slovak mother; and he is the younger brother of light-heavyweight boxer, Karol Itauma.
He initially switched to playing football with his other brother, Samuel, but later returned to boxing at St Mary’s ABC in Chatham, Kent, and he has held the Commonwealth heavyweight title since 2025.
Before then, Itauma had an unbeaten amateur career, claimed gold medals in Schools, Juniors, Youth European and the Heavyweight Youth World Gold Medal, then turned professional with a record of 24 wins with 11 by knockout.
Most recently, Itauma was scheduled to face Jermaine Franklin at Co-op Live in Manchester on January 24th but he suffered an injury in training and the fight has now been postponed until March 28th at the same venue.
