2026 Viareggio Cup Begins With Enugu Rangers vs Fiorentina Opener as Eight Nigerian Clubs Ready to Rumble

Enugu Rangers will fly Nigeria’s flag in the opening match of the 76th edition of the Viareggio Cup when the Flying Antelopes’ youth team faces Italian side Fiorentina U18 on Monday, March 9, 2026.

The tournament which is one of the world’s most prestigious youth football tournaments will run from March 9 to March 23 in Italy.

It has long served as a global showcase for emerging football talents, attracting elite youth academies and development squads and tip scouts around the world.

Nigeria heads into this year’s competition with a strong representation of eight teams, underlining the growing reputation of the country’s youth football system on the international stage.

The curtain-raiser between Enugu Rangers and Fiorentina is scheduled for 2:30 PM local time and is expected to provide an early test for the Nigerian side against one of Italy’s established youth setups.

A total of five Nigerian teams will begin their campaigns on the opening day of the competition.

In addition to the Enugu Rangers versus Fiorentina clash, One Touch Abuja will face hosts Viareggio Calcio, Nexus Football Academy will take on Serie A side Sassuolo, RBM Sports will battle UYSS New York, while Mavlon FC will square off against Genoa.

The remaining Nigerian representatives will commence their participation on Tuesday, March 10.

Magic Stars are scheduled to face Spezia, Ojodu City will take on Serbian giants Red Star Belgrade, while FuturePro Soccer will battle the Serie D Representative team.

Nigeria’s strong presence in the 2026 edition reflects the continued growth and recognition of its youth development structures as investors are determined to give their best talents the best exposure the game could offer.

Nigerian academies have increasingly produced players capable of competing with top youth teams worldwide.

Confidence among the Nigerian contingents is also buoyed by the historic achievement recorded in 2024, when Beyond Limits Academy—affiliated with Remo Stars—became the first African team to win the Viareggio Cup in 2024.

That landmark triumph elevated the global profile of Nigerian youth club football, and with eight teams competing in this year’s edition, expectations are high that the country could once again leave a significant mark on the tournament.

As action begins in the Italian city of Viareggio, attention will focus on the next generation of Nigerian talents hoping to seize the moment and possibly write another memorable chapter in the country’s rich youth football story.
