The Nigeria Football Coaches Association (NFCA), Ogun State Chapter Secretary Adamson Omotunde Abiodun has celebrated the Flamingos following their emphatic triumph at the 2026 WAFU-B U17 Girls Cup, describing the national U-17 women’s team as a symbol of consistency, character and courage in Nigerian youth football.
Reacting to the Flamingos’ success, NFCA Ogun State Chapter State General Secretary, Coach Adamson Omotunde Abiodun, said the team’s latest achievement was evidence of a winning culture that has become increasingly synonymous with Nigeria’s U-17 girls.
“If there is one team that has redefined consistency, character, and courage in Nigerian youth football today, it is our National U-17 Girls Team – the Flamingos,” Abiodun said.
The Flamingos completed a flawless campaign in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire, winning all five matches, scoring 17 goals and conceding only two.
Nigeria began the competition with a commanding 5-0 victory over Niger before producing a memorable 4-2 triumph against Ghana. The Flamingos showed remarkable resilience in the encounter after being reduced to 10 players following Elizabeth Adesuyi’s red card.
They followed the result with consecutive 2-0 victories over Burkina Faso and hosts Côte d’Ivoire, taking firm control of the competition before facing Togo in the final.
The final proved to be another dominant display as Nigeria defeated Togo 4-0. Captain Harmony Chidi scored twice from the penalty spot in the 15th and 35th minutes, while Oluebube Umejiaku and Oluwakemi Adegbuyi completed the scoring in the second half.
Abiodun described the campaign as a product of preparation and coaching rather than luck, while particularly highlighting the influence of Head Coach Hakeem Busari.
According to him, Busari has brought tactical education, mental resilience and a strong youth-development philosophy to the Flamingos.
“He has built a team that does not fold under pressure,” Abiodun noted, pointing to Nigeria’s performance against Ghana as evidence of the team’s mental strength.
The NFCA Ogun State official also expressed particular pride in Busari’s contribution, noting that the Flamingos coach is the Technical Head of the Coaching and Education Department of the NFCA, Ogun State Chapter.
For Abiodun, the WAFU-B title is more than just another trophy. He believes it provides valuable momentum ahead of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco, where Nigeria will face Poland, North Korea and Puerto Rico in Group B.
He also praised players including Harmony Chidi, Oluwakemi Adegbuyi, Mary Dunstan and Awawu Bashiru for their contributions to the successful campaign.
“As the State General Secretary of NFCA, Ogun State, I am immensely proud. Proud of the Flamingos. Proud of Coach Hakeem Busari who continues to lift the flag of Ogun State coaching excellence at the national level,” Abiodun stated.
He urged Nigerians to continue supporting the Flamingos as they prepare for the global stage.
