The vice-president of Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF), Omonlei Imadu has spoken gleefully about what he referred to as the beginning of ‘a new era’ for the pugilists sport in the country.
Sports247 reports that Imadu made the assertion while providing details of the NBF’s revitalized drive that led to the introduction of a ‘National Boxing Week’ loaded with various activities.

Imadu also excitedly disclosed that the maiden National Boxing Week, which also formally ignites the NBF’s preparations for this year’s Commonwealth Games, has some foreign-based Nigerian boxers in attendance.
He added that Brai Ayonote Boxing Gym at Lagos National Stadium, Surulere came on Sunday and will be agog until this Friday, with bouts holding in various weight categories to select Nigeria’s representatives for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
While pointing out that the week includes the National Open Trials, which will give equal opportunities to both home-based boxers and those from abroad to compete for spots, Imadu said it’s a turning point for Nigerian boxing.
“This is a new era for Nigerian boxing. The fact that our foreign-based athletes are returning home to compete speaks volumes about the credibility of the process we are building.
“Selection for the Commonwealth Games will be fierce, but it will be fair and strictly based on merit,” Imadu affirmed, then disclosed that the trials will feature ten weight categories across men’s and women’s divisions.
Sports247 gathered further that NBF’s affiliated clubs, state boxing associations, agencies, academic institutions and foreign-based promoters will present one boxer for each weight category of the five-day competition.
