Arokodare Opens Up on AFCON Omission, Admits He “Saw it Coming”

Super Eagles striker Tolu Arokodare has revealed that his omission from Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations squad did not come as a shock, admitting he had already sensed it before the final list was released.

Speaking candidly about the decision, the Wolverhampton Wanderers forward explained that his last appearance with the national team, particularly the game against DR Congo, played a major role in shaping his expectations.

“To be honest, I already knew I wasn’t going to the AFCON even before the list came out,” Arokodare said. “My last game with the team against DR Congo wasn’t ideal, and I could feel it from there.”

The striker added that he also took a realistic look at his club situation at the time, acknowledging that his form and standing did not strongly support a place in the squad.

“I did an honest assessment of my club season then, and I knew I wasn’t high in the pecking order. Sometimes you just have to be truthful with yourself,” he noted.

Rather than dwell on disappointment, Arokodare stressed that he chose to see the situation as motivation to improve and return stronger.

“Of course, every player wants to play at AFCON, but football is about timing. I didn’t feel bitter. I saw it as something I needed to work harder for,” he said.

The 24-year-old also praised the atmosphere around the Super Eagles camp, insisting that competition for places is healthy and necessary for the growth of the national team.

“There are quality players everywhere. If you want to be there, you must earn it consistently at club level. That’s the reality,” Arokodare explained.

Looking ahead, the forward made it clear that his international ambitions remain firmly intact.

“This doesn’t change anything for me. My goal is still to represent Nigeria at the highest level. I’ll keep pushing, scoring goals, and making myself available whenever the opportunity comes,” he said.

Arokodare concluded by backing the current Super Eagles squad, expressing confidence in their ability to compete strongly at the tournament.

“I believe in the team. They’ve worked hard and deserve to be there. I’ll be supporting them fully and preparing myself for the next chance,” he added.
