Fenerbahce are positioning themselves for one of the most eye-catching deals of the January transfer window as talks with Atalanta over Nigerian winger Ademola Lookman reach an advanced stage.

Negotiations between both clubs have intensified in recent days, with Atalanta demanding a package worth around €40 million — €35 million upfront plus €5 million in performance-related add-ons.
While there is a broad verbal alignment on valuation, the deal now hinges on payment structure and bonus conditions, the final hurdles before completion.
The Turkish giants’ intent is clear. Sporting director Devin Özek has flown to Italy to personally drive negotiations over the line, underlining Fenerbahce’s urgency to conclude the transfer before the window shuts.
The club sees Lookman as a transformational signing capable of elevating their domestic title push and boosting their European ambitions.
However, the landscape is shifting. Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano reports that Atlético Madrid have made late enquiries with Atalanta, testing the waters and adding competitive pressure at a critical moment.
While Fenerbahce currently lead the race, Atalanta’s firm stance means any hesitation could reopen the door for rival suitors.
For Lookman, the potential move represents the next chapter in a turbulent but ultimately rewarding journey.
The 26-year-old sought an exit last summer amid claims of broken promises from Atalanta, even temporarily refusing to play as Inter Milan failed in multiple attempts to land him.
Now, after re-establishing himself as one of Serie A’s standout attackers and winning the 2024 African Player of the Year award, his stock has never been higher.
Fenerbahce view Lookman not just as a reinforcement, but as a strategic asset — a marquee signing that signals ambition, credibility, and intent. If finalised, the deal would rank among the biggest January transfers in Europe and mark a major power play from the Istanbul club.
