HAFCON 2025: Nigeria’s Last Shot at Semi-Final, World Championship Place as Golden Arrows Face Egypt in Must-Win Clash

Nigeria’s senior men’s handball team, the Golden Arrows, have been handed another opportunity to reach the semi-finals of the 27th Africa Men’s Handball Nations Cup and keep alive their hopes of qualifying for the 2027 IHF World Championship in Germany as they prepare to face Egypt in a decisive Group A encounter.

The crucial fixture will take place on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at the BK Arena, Kigali, Rwanda, with both pride and progression firmly on the line.

Nigeria head into the match determined to bounce back from their first setback of the main draw, a narrow 27–24 defeat to Angola.

Despite that loss, the Golden Arrows remain firmly in contention for a semi-final berth, currently sitting second in the qualification standings, ahead of Angola on goal difference and trailing only group leaders Egypt.

Victory against the North African powerhouse would secure Nigeria a place in the final four and significantly enhance their chances of sealing a long-awaited return to the global stage at the World Championship.

The Golden Arrows have shown grit and consistency throughout the tournament, picking up crucial wins earlier in the group phase before the Angola defeat.

They now face a formidable Egyptian side that has been imperious so far, recording maximum points and establishing themselves as one of the tournament favourites.

Although Egypt have dominated recent head-to-head meetings, Nigeria will be looking to rise to the occasion with improved concentration, tactical discipline, and defensive solidity in what promises to be a high-stakes and fiercely contested encounter.

With semi-final qualification and World Championship ambitions hanging in the balance, the spotlight will be firmly on the Golden Arrows as they take on Africa’s most successful handball nation in a must-win showdown.
