Onyemaechi Stakes Claim as Olympiacos Edge Volos Ahead of Ajax Test

With a crucial UEFA Champions League trip to Amsterdam to face Ajax looming, Olympiacos approached the domestic fixture with maturity and discipline, dictating the tempo and keeping Volos firmly on the back foot for long stretches.

The breakthrough arrived in the 26th minute when Ayoub El Kaabi calmly converted a one-on-one chance after a slick assist from Daniel Podence. That strike proved decisive in a contest where Olympiacos dominated possession and chance creation but failed to add further gloss to the scoreline.

While El Kaabi grabbed the headlines, Onyemaechi quietly put in a performance that spoke volumes. Recently returned from AFCON 2025 duty with Nigeria, the Super Eagles full-back completed the full 90 minutes and was rock-solid on the left flank.

He won all four of his tackles, made an interception and a clearance, registered seven recoveries, and completed 50 of his 57 passes—numbers that underlined both defensive reliability and composure in build-up.

Volos offered little in attack, largely due to Olympiacos’ defensive control, with Onyemaechi playing a key role in shutting down threats on his side. His assured display allowed the hosts to maintain pressure high up the pitch and manage the game with minimal risk.

The 24-year-old has now started five of the seven league matches he has featured in this season, accumulating 469 minutes, and his latest outing further strengthens his case for a regular starting role.

As Olympiacos juggle domestic ambitions with European demands, Onyemaechi’s consistency is fast becoming an asset the club can rely on.

Ahead of the high-stakes clash with Ajax, Olympiacos may take confidence not just from the result, but from the emergence of a defender whose performances suggest he is ready for the biggest stages.
