In a circular addressed to Directors of Sports in the 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and cycling club owners nationwide, the CFN Secretary General, Mr. Joel Akinluwa, called on stakeholders to align their preparations with the approved schedule to ensure Nigerian cyclists are adequately prepared for the demands of the season.

Akinluwa explained that the early release of the calendar was designed to support effective planning and coordination among state sports councils, cycling clubs and sponsors.

He also urged recipients to circulate the schedule among chairmen of Sports Commissions, Directors of Sports and other relevant stakeholders within their states.

The 2026 cycling season will officially begin on January 26 with an International Cycling Union (UCI)-sanctioned online Level 1 coaching course, reflecting the federation’s emphasis on capacity building and technical development as a foundation for improved athlete performance.

The calendar features 11 international championships, underscoring Nigeria’s expanding footprint on the global cycling stage.

One of the highlights is the Confederation of African Cycling (CAC) Africa Track and Para-Track Championship, scheduled to hold in Abuja in May, which will see the country host top cyclists from across the continent.

Nigerian cyclists are also expected to feature prominently at major global events, including the Commonwealth Games slated for July 23 to August 2 in Glasgow, Scotland, and the UCI Para-Cycling Road Championship scheduled for September in the United States.

According to Akinluwa, the 2026 programme will climax with the biennial National Sports Festival, which will be hosted by Enugu State for the first time. The festival is expected to take place in December, with the exact dates to be announced by the organisers.

With the detailed calendar released well ahead of the season, the CFN expressed optimism that early preparation would translate into stronger performances, better talent development and sustained growth of cycling at all levels across Nigeria.
