“I’m Poised to Return to Action” — Chibueze Ezeifule Damien Set for NPFL Comeback

Niger Tornadoes central defender Chibueze Ezeifule Damien has declared his readiness to return to competitive action after recovering from an illness that ruled him out of the opening fixtures of the second stanza of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

The Imo State–born defender, who joined the Minna-based side from Kun Khalifat FC, has been one of the standout performers for the Ikon Allah Boys this season.

Prior to his absence, Chibueze featured in 18 league matches and played a pivotal role in stabilising the team’s defensive unit.

His commanding presence at the heart of defence, alongside Sunday Akinmoladun, helped Niger Tornadoes establish one of their most dependable centre-back partnerships during the first round of the campaign.

Popularly nicknamed “Maldini,” Chibueze attributes the moniker to his deep admiration for legendary Italian defender and former AC Milan captain, Paolo Maldini.

He explained that Maldini’s leadership, discipline, and fighting spirit have greatly influenced his own approach to defending.

“I admire Maldini because he was a true leader and a fighter who always gave everything for the badge,” Chibueze said. “Watching him while growing up shaped my mentality as a defender and how I approach every game.”

Describing his time with Niger Tornadoes as a defining phase of his career, the centre-back stressed his determination to repay the confidence shown in him by the club’s technical crew.

“This is my first real experience in the NPFL, and it means a lot to me,” he added. “I want to show commitment, sacrifice, and consistency for Niger Tornadoes. The trust the coaches have placed in me is something I can only repay with strong performances on the pitch.”

After missing the club’s last three league fixtures, Chibueze confirmed he has fully recovered and is now available for selection ahead of this weekend’s crucial home clash against Enyimba FC.

“I’m fully fit now after overcoming the illness that kept me out,” he said. “I’m healed, well-rested, and ready to make a strong comeback.”

Niger Tornadoes will host Enyimba FC in Minna in what will be their only home fixture in January. With the Ikon Allah Boys eager to halt a recent run of defeats, the return of Chibueze Ezeifule Damien is expected to provide a timely boost to the team’s defensive solidity and overall confidence.
